Owned by French Champagne house Tattinger, Domaine Carneros is located in the Carneros wine-growing region at the south end of the Napa Valley. Its attention-grabbing, elegant architecture was inspired by an 18th-century Chateau de la Marquetterie, owned by Tattinger and located in France’s Champagne region.

The property’s location is one of its strongest points, sitting on a hilltop overlooking vineyards in every direction.

    2. Artesa Vineyards & Winery

1345 Henry Rd
Napa, CA 94558
(707) 224-1668

Hours Open: Mon-Sun 10 am – 4:30 pm

Set high into a hilltop with panoramic views of Napa Valley, San Francisco Bay and its own estate vineyards, it’s easy to see why Artesa is called the Jewel of Carneros.

Perhaps no other winery captures the multi-faceted beauty of this windswept, world-famous appellation as dramatically as the Artesa estate, where the fusion of architecture, artistry and winegrowing reaches soaring heights.

Owned by the Raventos family of Spain, whose winemaking history dates to the mid-sixteenth century, the winery takes its name from the Catalan word for “handcrafted.” Today, Artesa focuses on producing small, ultra-premium lots of the varietals for which the Carneros and the Napa Valley are best known – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Each of the 50 blocks at the ranch is a product of our efforts to discover the vineyard’s full potential. To us, each block is an experiment and results are obtained very slowly. With our approach to farming, it takes about 7 years for root systems and canopies to reach full development and several more to understand how the wine will progress. As a result, it often takes 10 years to discover if our choice of clone, root, and varietal was appropriate for a given site. Our blocks will continue to change as we learn and try new things, and because they reflect the state of our vineyard, our wines will change as well. Expressing the individuality of these blocks in the wines made from them is educational for us and we hope it is for you too.

George Whiting Hendry and his wife Margaret purchased the Hendry Ranch in 1939. George was an Agronomy professor, and with teaching responsibilities in Berkeley and Davis, Napa lay a convenient distance between the two. His interests lay primarily in wheat crops, but the ranch came with plum trees, pastureland, 6 acres of vineyard, an old farm house and a Ford tractor. The early years at the ranch were partly occupied with the development of a well, and the construction of a reasonable bridge across the creek. The vineyard was always part of the ranch, but wasn’t initially its focal point.

    4. Jacuzzi Family Vineyards

24724 Arnold Dr
Sonoma, CA 95476
(866) 522-8693

Hours Open: Mon-Sun 10 am – 5:30 pm

From hot swirling water and bubbles to organic grapes and a destination winery, the Jacuzzi family is enjoying it all. This winery was inspired by the Jacuzzi family home in the northern Italian city of Casarsa. With a look reminiscent of a medieval monastery, it consists of a complex of smaller sand-colored stone and stucco-clad structures organized around a romantic central courtyard. Traditional architectural details and natural materials add to the visitor’s sense that the buildings pre-date their actual construction.

The interior features Venetian-style glass chandeliers, a 17-foot stone-cast fountain imported from Italy, and an 80-year-old fig tree. Mature olive trees adorn the entrance.

The Vineyard Vista overlooks wetland preserves, other vineyards and distant mountain ranges. The Jacuzzi Family Vineyards farms using the “Green String” method, known to well exceed organic farming standards. Wines produced include Barbera, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Primitivo and Sangiovese.

    5.Cline Cellars Winery

24737 Arnold Dr
Sonoma, CA 95476
(707) 940-4030

Hours Open: Mon-Sun 10 am – 6 pm

Although many Carneros wineries specialize in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Cline Cellars goes its own way by focusing on Rhône varietals, such as Syrah, Roussanne, and Viognier, all grown here in Carneros, as well as Mourvèdre and Carignane, which are cultivated in Contra Costa County. Cline is also known for its Ancient Vines Zinfandel, produced from vines that are around 100 years old. The 1850s farmhouse that houses the tasting room has a pleasant wraparound porch for enjoying the weeping willows, ponds, fountains, and thousands of rosebushes on the property. Save time for the free California Missions Museum, located on site and open from 10-4.
